The Festival of Gardening

a celebration of all things garden

The Festival of Gardening is an annual plant sale held on the first Saturday of May at the Miller Park Aviary. This festival is the Hill City Master Gardener Association’s only fundraiser to support our youth and community outreach programs.

Saturday, May 6, 2017

8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Rain or shine

Miller Park Aviary, 420 Grove St., Lynchburg

The Festival features…

Locally grown plants and vegetables

You’ll find more than 3,000 plants – every single one grown from seed, propagated from cutting or divided from mature plants by local Master Gardener volunteers. We offer trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs, wildflowers, houseplants, tropicals, hanging baskets and container gardens. Choose from heirlooms, unusual cultivars – some classic, some new – among the many vegetables. Vegetables include many varieties of tomatoes, from huge slicers to tiny, sweet cherries, several types of peppers, eggplant, squash, cucumbers and many more.  Our prices are more reasonable than at local nurseries or big-box stores.

A garden lover’s cornucopia of unique treasures

Visit the Garden Accessories section to discover one-of-a-kind decorative items crafted by Master Gardeners. You’ll find books, baskets, ceramic plant pots, birdhouses, plant stands, vases, tabletop ware and gardening tools. Shop for yourself or shop for gifts to brighten the day of a fellow gardener.

Gardening Demonstrations

Every year we add new demonstration areas on the latest in garden technologies. Learn to make compost from kitchen scraps that will enrich your garden’s soil with our own Givens’ Compost Tumbler. Conserve water with a rain barrel. Hear about new irrigation methods and ideas.

Free Horticulture Seminars

Enjoy free horticulture seminars in the historic Aviary building. Topics vary annually but some repeat by popular demand from attendees. Topics include – “Tick-borne Illness: A Practical Guide for Gardeners,” the “Zen of Deer Management for the Home Gardener,” “Water Wise Landscaping,” “Shade Landscaping”  and “Trees for Spring Flowers and Fall Colors.”

Help Desk

Our Information booth is staffed by Master Gardeners to answer all your gardening dilemmas. Stop by to ask a question or share your own gardening tips. We’d love to meet you.

Plant Corral

Our secure Plant Corral can store your purchases while you continue to shop, attend a seminar or visit the Foggy Cafe. Help loading your vehicle is available if you need assistance.

Children's Activities

Bring the whole family! Each year we offer engaging children’s activities about plants and the environment. This year the children could build a “toyrarium” and plant a “living locket.”

Breakfast and coffee

The Foggy Cafe brews rich coffee early to greet the day, plus offers ham biscuits and other breakfast items. The Cafe has cookies, cakes, rolls, breads and brownies to enjoy right away or take home. Everything is made from scratch by the Master Gardeners.
